Building on the success of iTi's highly regarded XY Material Deposition System introduced in 2002, with over 20 units installed worldwide, the MDS 300 provides developers with a highly accurate, printhead-independent platform for the development of industrial applications using inkjet technology -- from laboratory R&D through to pilot line fabrication -- Lab2Fab(SM).
"Our digital manufacturing initiative reflects exactly what our products offer -- the ability to do extensive R&D and process development, move to pilot line production and then transition to full scale fabrication -- all in a family of Lab2Fab(SM) systems," says iTi CEO, Bruce Morgan. "Our customers reflect this -- from universities working on pure R&D, to innovators developing complex processes, to one company who is running their MDS system in a pilot production line 18 hours a day, 5 days a week producing commercial products. That customer will move to a VJET industrial deposition printer for full scale production in the spring of 2008."
The MDS 300 features high precision cast aluminum linear stages mounted to a solid granite base giving positional repeatability of plus or minus 500nm and overall accuracy across the new Gen 2 size platen, with optional error mapping, of plus or minus 3 micrometers. This very high accuracy makes the MDS 300 well suited for emerging printed electronics, photovoltaic and display applications where the precise metering of expensive fluids and the ability to print fine features are essential.
"Accuracy and flexibility are essential requirements for Lab2Fab(SM) systems," says iTi CTO & Chairman Dr. Ross Mills. "We've responded to market demands for higher accuracy through a range of mapping options for the MDS 300 and we've maintained flexibility by having a printhead independent system so users can select the right inkjet technology for their application."
To further enhance flexibility, the MDS 300 incorporates a new 6-slot printhead mount which allows different printheads or pinning lamps to be installed on the system at the same time, eliminating changeover time and helping to accelerate development projects.
In a MDS product roll out throughout 2008, iTi will offer a comprehensive range of options and enhancements including inert atmosphere capability; larger platen options; automated substrate alignment; stage mapping options and an automated nozzle checker.
The desire to replace inefficient analog production processes is accelerating and the advantage of inkjet as an additive digital process is becoming widely accepted across a broad range of applications from direct writing of UV resist on PCBs, to the application of multiple fluids for the fabrication of complex functional devices. iTi's Lab2Fab(SM) digital deposition systems are used to jet UV resist, dielectrics, conductives, scratch resist coatings, conductive polymers, biologicals and many other functional fluids.
The MDS 300 is available for immediate delivery.
