Thomson Scientific, part of The Thomson Corporation (NYSE: TOC; TSX: TOC) and leading provider of information solutions to the worldwide research and business communities, today announced the winners of the 2007 Innovation Award, recognizing leadership in technology as it relates to all aspects of scientific literature and patent publications in India.
The award, presented for the first time at the InfoVision 2007 conference in Mumbai, India, went to Natco Research Center for their achievements through patented technology as recorded in Thomson Scientific patent information services. In particular, Natco was determined to be the most efficient innovator by ranking the number of inventions per R&D spend.

Winners were selected from small and medium-sized enterprises headquartered in India and were chosen by analyzing their innovation through patented technology as recorded in Thomson Scientific patent information services. Criteria for the award included the number of patents, the efficiency of innovation and the impact of innovation as measured by patent citations.
Intellectual Property Drives Economic and Technological Development in India
The importance of intellectual property as a major source for economic and technological development in India is demonstrated by the increasing creativity and impact of Indian research and technology throughout the world. The last five years have seen an increase in publications by 45 percent and a rapid increase in patenting activity. To foster this increase, the Indian Patent Office has recently joined the patent offices of USA, Japan, South Korea, China and the Europe in offering online filing for trademark and patent applications. The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) dominates the ranking table of the Top 10 patent assignees for all Indian inventions from 1968 - 2004 and has also recently purchased Thomson Scientific's ISI Web of Knowledge platform to provide access to its 10,000 scientists across 45 labs in India, allowing all users to cross-search complementary resources.
