In Hindu mythology when a man dies and his funeral pyre has to be lit the fire must be provided by son only and not the daughter so that the man gets moksha or salvation . This is common belief of most people and if they don’t have son they won’t get moksha or salvation. This has no meaning now and in many cases it is the progressive girls who are performing this last rite. However till recent past this has been the cause of population growth as the couples go on producing children till they get male child. Some time it is 3rd or 4th or 5th or even 6th or 7th child. In some tribes and societies a girl child is considered liability due to ever increasing dowry system. A marriage means inviting a 200 to 1000 to 5000 people and spending huge sum of money on feast and providing dowry for the bridegroom. Some people take pride in putting some price to their son and it can vary from 20 million to 10 million to 5 million to 1 million depending his position. A Govt official gets highest bid, followed by doctors , engineers and businessman and teachers are perhaps lowest in demand. These two factors are causing tremendous increase in population. In times of less food it is female child of the household who get a cut in food so many girls are malnourished. If some one is needed for help it is the female child who is withheld from the school. Female child has to work at home and take care of his brothers . Malnourishment is not related with food supply it is mostly disproportional in the family itself. When will a nation be more advanced to take boys and girls alike . Some times girls excel the boys in all fields and parents can be proud of that. Hope more and more parents will accept that and population growth may be checked. It is surprising that now no one talks of population control or family welfare programme. Population explosion can be very dangerous if not managed properly as earth’s resources are limited and population is unlimited. Love nature and keep healthy.
