A visit to Punjab made any one happy . The prime reason has always been to see canals, good roads, hardworking people, basic cleanliness. Chandigarh a Union Territory represents all of Punjab, Haryana and even HP .
While waiting for a flight at Chandigarh I saw the news paper report about Punjab. Experts of PAU have reported (Daily Post Monday 4th June) ground water table is being lowered in the last one and half years at an alarming rate and state is facing acute shortage of water now. “Level of ground water has reached at alarming level in 115 out of 142 blocks of state and these are kept in danger zone” Dr Gill and Dr Butter of PAU haven shown grave concern.Ground water level has gone down to 200 to 250 feet in Moga and Sangarur. The only reason of deepening of water crisis is less availability of river water for irrigation and unbridled use of groundwater for production of paddy. Experts are frequently asking farmers to adopt water saving measures during cultivation of paddy in the kharif season. We need 4000 litres of water to produce one kg of rice. Ground water level have been lowered by 20 m in last decade. The state will have no measures to bring out ground water to the surface. Imagine if this is the condition of Punjab a land of 5 rivers what will happen to Rajasthan. Conserve water to conserve life on earth.
If ground water is gone, rivers are gone, can you imagine life on earth
Tomorrow is world environment day.
Good luck to plants, water and human life on earth and to all of you contributing to the protection of nature.
