About Byron I am a PhD student in the Tri-Institutional Training Program in Computational Biology and Medicine (the three institutions being Cornell University, The Rockefeller University, and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center), using computational models to further understand the mechanisms underlying cardiac ischemia-reperfusion arrhythmias (disturbances to the heart's normal electrical activity when blood flow is restored to a region of the heart that was previously receiving either inadequate or no blood flow). I currently reside in New York City, but my roots lie on the West Coast, having been born and raised in the wine country north of San Francisco. I graduated from the University of California, Davis in 2003 with a B.S. in Genetics, and stayed at the University for another two years to conduct research on the molecular genetics of brain cancer and to investigate potential therapies. Prior to transferring to UC Davis from Santa Rosa Junior College, I worked for several years as a paramedic in EMS systems throughout the Bay Area, and as an Emergency Medical Technician before that, volunteering both as a firefighter and in the emergency rooms of several hospitals. When not working, I can often be found playing with my iPhone, chatting with friends at Happy Hour or, more commonly, reading. I have been a science-fiction fan since I was a teenager, but more recently I have been reading a larger amount non-fiction- the world that we inhabit is such a fascinating place! I am interested in virtually all scientific disciplines, in addition to the history of science and the lives of scientists. In particular, I have become increasingly interested in the exploration of other worlds in our solar system, as well as the universe at larger scales, and the rapidly-expanding field of astriobiology. if you'd like, follow me on Twitter!
