2019 Greenland Melt Not Likely To Beat 2012 Record - 0.5 Mm Sea Rise Ice Melt Is Dramatic, But Glacier Flow Is Long Term Issue

2019 Greenland Melt Not Likely To Beat 2012 Record - 0.5 Mm Sea Rise Ice Melt Is Dramatic, But Glacier Flow Is Long Term Issue

Short summary. The 0.5 mm sea level rise due to ice melting in July is dramatic but you need to compare it with the rest of the year. July is usually the top month for ice loss. In the winter the Greenland ice sheet gains ice through snowfall, so you need to look at the balance between losses and gains.
Also you need to compare it with previous years. It’s actually not quite enough of a melt so far to beat the 2012 record. The Arctic sea ice minimum this year is also not expected to be as low as the 2012 minimum. .
This is nothing to be scared of. Just an unsurprising increased melt, after a previous year when there was so much snow that Greenland actually gained ice due to heavy winter snowfall in 2017–8

Josh Hawley's Alert After 30 Minutes Of Social Media Use Can't Pass - Can't Be Serious - But Internet Addiction Is An Issue

This is surely going to be one of the 93% of bills that never make it to law. First there is his op. ed. and surely this is not serious:
First his “maybe we’d be better off if Facebook disappeared.” is part of an argument. He is saying we need to be tough on social media and not let ourselves be shoved around by them.

Confront the industry, we’re told, and you might accidentally kill it — and with it, all the innovation it has (supposedly) brought to our society.
Maybe. But maybe social media’s innovations do our country more harm than good. Maybe social media is best understood as a parasite on productive investment, on meaningful relationships, on a healthy society.

‘Arctic On Fire’ Is Normal, Part Of Nature - Moose, Bears, Voles, Foxes, Owls, Birds Of Prey All Depend On Wild Fires

‘Arctic On Fire’ Is Normal, Part Of Nature - Moose, Bears, Voles, Foxes, Owls, Birds Of Prey All Depend On Wild Fires

Short summary - the Arctic is always on fire in summer, and it’s a natural part of the ecosystem, to the extent that moose, bears, bison, voles, foxes, owls, birds of prey, …, they are all dependent on the fires directly or indirectly. It would be a very different ecosystem without them. Part of the Arctic burns every year but other areas recently burned grow new growth such as birches, berries, herbs, willow, grassland, others then are turning into mature forests of spruce, which burn when they become very dry, others are peat banks that again burn when they are very dry and it cycles round and round.
Articles that warn about the effects on global warming are a bit premature. You need to look at all the effects over multi-year periods.

Ethiopians Plant 353 Million Trees In 12 Hours - World Record - Aim To Plant 4 Billion Total This Summer - What If UK Did Same?

Ethiopia has just planted 353 million trees in 12 hours. It is part of the national “green legacy” initiative to encourage all its citizens to plant 40 seedlings each for a total of 4 billion trees over this summer.

Why An Ice Free Summer Arctic Will NOT Have The Same Effect As 25 Years Of CO2 Emisisons

Why An Ice Free Summer Arctic Will NOT Have The Same Effect As 25 Years Of CO2 Emisisons

This is a new study that makes the dramatic claim that as the ice melts in summer in the Arctic, then because ice reflects away more sunlight than water, this will have a dramatic warming effect on the whole planet, equivalent to 25 years of anthropogenic emissions. It's been scaring many people but there is nothing here to worry about. Short summary: The study did not take account of the way the melting ice causes cloud to increase (because of all the extra water vapour it puts into the atmosphere). They assumed constant cover. But the paper they cite for that only found constant cloud cover as the ice melts in mid summer. Minimum sea ice extent is in September.

No Scientific Cliff Edge Of 12 Years To Save Planet (or 18 Months) - Can IPCC Challenge 'Deadlines Make Headlines' Misreporting?

Yes there is much we need to do and can do. As we ramp up on pledges quickly we reduce future impacts of droughts, wild fires, hurricanes and other climate related local disasters. We will reduce the effects of sea level rise, and avert warming levels likely to lead to millions of climate migrants (chapter 3, section 3.4. 12 and Figure 3.4 page 246). These actions are also good for our economy and better for biodiversity. By staying within 1.5°C, we can save coral reefs from near extinction, and reduce the amount of adaptation needed for many ecosystems.

No Asteroid Warning For 2007 FT3 - What NASA's Sentry Table Says In Words - Are You Scared By Fake Asteroid News?

This may help with this and other fake asteroid news. It's a no hazard asteroid.
There is no NASA warning at all. They have already removed 88 "no hazard" asteroids from their table so far this year.
It’s a 11 million to one against, and it's like rolling 9 or 10 dice and getting a six every time. An object this size hits only every 94,000 years.
They search for them so that they can warn us if they are going to hit. With a warning then we can either deflect it or evacuate the impact zone. There is no warning for this one.

Check My City's Climate For 2050: Example, London Like Barcelona (at 2°C) - Using Someone Else's Climate To Help City Planning

This is being reported in a way that scares some people But this is not new climate research, and changes nothing about the 2018 IPCC report. It is just a public education paper, helping people to understand the consequences of climate change, and evaluate environmental policies. It could have been written any time in the last decade and would have been essentially the same with minor tweaks.
