It wasn't easy to like "Superman Returns". Certainly, it was designed to reboot the franchise after "Superman II" but it ended up needing a reboot of its own. There were a few good sequences but overall it fell flat.
Movies from comic books are big. Really big. Too big to let the most recognizable superhero in the world sit on the shelf for too long so, like Batman after the George Clooney fiasco, or even Hulk, which Marvel tried to reboot, with limited success (yet another actor will play him in the Avengers movie) after Ang Lee's flop, Superman is getting another makeover.
And, like Batman, they got a Brit to play a classic American icon. They're clearly going younger, choosing Henry Cavill. Is he a good choice? Sure. If you saw "The Tudors" you know he is also a nuanced actor and he looks super which, sorry Brandon Routh, is important in 2011, though you looked enough like Christopher Reeve to make Bryan Singer happy. Hard to say anyone could be unhappy with $391 million worldwide gross but almost everyone was.
With Christopher 'who can do no wrong' Nolan producing and Zack Snyder, who clearly loves the genre, directing, look for Superman (whatever it is called) to be back in a big way.
