Gerhard Ertl of Fritz-Haber-Institut der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry for investigation into the various effects of reactions taking place on surfaces, which helped explain how fuel cells work and why iron rusts.

All three have published work in IOP journals like Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter, Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, Europhysics Letters (EPL) and New Journal of Physics and in celebration of the Nobel Laureates they are making those articles free to the public until they end of this year.
