- Vertica's blazingly fast analytic database reduces query wait times from 20 minutes to 8 seconds over traditional database engine

Market intelligence firm Diio is enabling airlines to make wiser network planning decisions and potentially greater profits, thanks in part to new ultra-fast database technology from Vertica.

Diio has implemented the Vertica Analytic Database to power a web-based aviation market intelligence tool for analyzing airline passenger demand. Major airlines around the world use the data to continuously monitor route performance and passenger behavior. They rely on fast access to more than one billion passenger itinerary records stored in Vertica. Additionally, many major airports around the world use the data to monitor passenger traffic patterns in their regions, as well as to attract new airline services. Diio partnered with Vertica to optimize this web-based tool because the ever-growing influx of data combined with sophisticated query demands was overwhelming the system's traditional database engine.

We're thrilled with Vertica's performance, said Max Klee, Diio architect. Large numbers of concurrent users were eating us alive -- queries could take as long as 20 minutes to execute. With Vertica as our new database platform, queries average around eight seconds, even under maximum user loads. It's vital for our clients to be able to do extremely fast analysis to optimize market performance and maximize revenue in today's dynamic air service environment. With Vertica driving the application, users don't have to sit and wait to make those decisions.

Vertica is a grid-based, column-oriented database built to handle massive analytic workloads such as those experienced by Diio. With its aggressive data compression and columnar storage, the Vertica Analytic Database enables Diio to store and analyze much larger volumes of passenger data and run queries orders of magnitude faster than conventional relational databases. Vertica is self-optimizing, which eliminates manual tuning and configuration overhead; combining that with its economic use of hardware and highly differentiated performance makes it an ideal database to embed within commercial analytic software and appliances.

Cloud Computing Facilitated the Evaluation of Vertica

Diio also took advantage of Vertica's cloud-based offering to lower the cost of evaluating the Vertica Analytic Database. The Diio IT infrastructure consisted entirely of Sun hardware running Solaris, and rather than purchase new x-86-based Linux hardware just to test Vertica, Diio had a one-node Vertica for the Cloud instance created. Diio loaded the cloud with a billion rows of data and then performed extensive head-to-head performance tests against a fully optimized production row-oriented database. Vertica for the Cloud out-performed Diio's production system, and they eventually decided to license Vertica and bring it in house. The cloud was such an easy, scalable environment that Diio may consider it for future projects.

Leading carriers realize that advanced tools with fast access to huge data stores are required to analyze airline passenger demand, said Colin Mahony, Vertica's senior director of business development. Historically, these tools have been expensive to buy, slow to perform and cumbersome to use. By using Vertica, Diio has provided its clients with an affordable yet highly accurate tool with the blazingly fast responsiveness needed to out-perform their competitors.
