LAS VEGAS, April 1 /PRNewswire/ --

- Information on more than 5,000 devices soon to be available in comprehensive database of global mobile handset information

dotMobi, the company behind .mobi -- the first and only Internet address designed specifically for mobile phones -- today unveiled forthcoming updates to the recently launched DeviceAtlas, which is the definitive global source of mobile handset information for mobile content developers.

By mid-April 2008, DeviceAtlas will include data from mobile Internet solution providers Argogroup and Volantis, bringing the total number of devices covered to more than 5,000. The new data adds a wide variety of U.S. and Japanese handsets to DeviceAtlas as well as attribute information on leading-edge mobile devices like the Apple iPhone, the RIM Blackberry Pearl, the Nintendo DS Lite and the Amazon Kindle.

"DeviceAtlas is continually growing and being updated, and these upcoming additions are definitely a proof point of that," said Paul Nerger, Vice President of Advanced Services and Applications, dotMobi. "It's also exciting to see the number of developers who have quickly adopted DeviceAtlas for their work."

At the launch of DeviceAtlas in February 2008, dotMobi announced it would provide one free DeviceAtlas Developer Edition license to every member of the http://dev.mobi developer forum; in the past month, the free dev.mobi forum has grown to more than 11,000 members. And in the six weeks since launch, hundreds of those mobile developers have taken advantage of that offer and are using DeviceAtlas to create "device aware" content for the widest possible variety of mobiles.

"But that's only the beginning," said James Pearce, dotMobi's Vice President of Technology. "In the very near future, dotMobi will introduce a mobile phone testing suite as part of the DeviceAtlas that allows us to exercise and confirm each device's capabilities. This will result in better data for developers to build 'device aware' content."

Pearce added, "We're preparing to add device information from DeviceAtlas into our very popular mobile readiness testing tool at http://ready.mobi. This will let ready.mobi to do better device simulation on a wider variety of phones. Developers will be able to see how their content will display on a very wide variety of mobile phones along with a report on how they can correct any errors if their sites are not displaying correctly."
