LONDON, October 21 /PRNewswire/ -- CA has announced the results of a European survey that reveals the extent to which organisations are not following IT security regulations. The survey, Privileged User Management - It's Time to Take Control, was carried out by Quocirca on behalf of CA and covered 14 countries across EMEA. 270 senior IT managers were interviewed in the telecommunications media, manufacturing, financial services, and government sectors.

A privileged user is typically the IT administrator who has greater system access rights than most. This survey is a timely wake-up call for many IT departments when new privacy regulations are about to come into force across Europe, said Tim Dunn, VP, Security Business EMEA, CA. 41% of the respondents who implemented the ISO27001 standard were non-compliant with regard to the management of privileged users - e.g. sharing privileged user accounts; this points to further bad practice like the use of default privileged account user names and passwords. In addition, only 26% have deployed a full privileged user management system.
Bob Tarzey, Director, Quocirca comments, The research reveals that while it is in the interest of organisations to adopt measures to control and monitor privileged users, it is not a priority. The only way to achieve watertight privileged user management is to automate the management of privileged user accounts and the assignment of privileged user access rights
Countries most likely to share administrator accounts are France (60%) Belgium (60%) and the Netherlands (53%). By contrast, the French were the most confident about being able to monitor and control privileged user accounts (scoring 4.26 out of 1-5). The countries least likely to share administrator accounts are Spain (7%), Israel (7%), and Germany (10%). 63% of French organisations participating in the survey rely on manual monitoring of privileged user activity, following by Belgium (50%), and Denmark (47%).
