The sophisticated Wavenis technology complements Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, while offering a perfect balance of power consumption, range, reliability, and robustness, notes Frost Sullivan Research Analyst Avanti Chitnis. The company has made significant progress by providing valuable functionalities such as network connectivity for devices that form part of inherently resource-constrained wireless sensor networks.

Wavenis is an ultra low-power, long-range capable, low-cost wireless mesh networking technology which can support different network topologies like star, tree, and mesh. Geared with self-configuration capabilities and dynamic routing algorithms, it addresses all the requirements of a wireless sensor network, from the hardware to the communication protocol stack.

In addition to the long-range capability that spreads up to a distance of about 1 km within line of sight and about 200 metres indoors, the Wavenis technology also offers lower power consumption for devices that adapt to Wavenis. This technology operates in the sub-1 GHz band, avoiding the overcrowding that plagues other networking technologies operating in the global 2.4 GHz band.

Coronis's unique solution addresses the special requirements of applications such as automatic meter reading, home building automation, radio frequency identification tracking systems for assets as well as personnel, remote data monitoring systems, industrial automation, and food chain monitoring systems, states Chitnis. The Wavenis technology can be easily integrated into surveillance and monitoring systems as well as healthcare applications, wherein warnings have to be issued on time and where adherence to strict regulatory constraints is important.

Medical devices that have wireless capability can also adapt the Wavenis technology as a communication standard. Coronis serves a range of other applications such as remote water and energy monitoring, temperature and environment monitoring and even security and control.

In line with the Coronis's original strategic plan, supported by continuous evangelization efforts and millions of Wavenis-enabled devices deployed in the field, the Wavenis Open Standard Alliance was launched in June of 2008. Coronis and Orange are now a Board of Director members of this independent, non-profit organization. Coronis aims to capitalize on its technical and market expertise across the value chain to develop and promote its Wavenis-enabled product line, thus expanding the addressable market.

With industry partners like Elster Group, Saur, Sensus Metering, Radix International Corp, GTT Engineering, Orange/France Telecom, Wavecom, Novacom Services, Schneider Electric, Coronis is well poised for wide-scale deployment of its Wavenis technology, comments Chitnis. With the aim of promoting greater adoption of this technology and greater standardisation, the company's Wavenis Open Standard Alliance looks to establish links with international standardisation bodies such as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, HART, ISA-SP100 and also other technology groups like Bluetooth, Konnex and ZigBee alliance.

Since its inception, Coronis has exhibited consistent growth and its revenues have doubled every year. The company has an aggressive RD programme that is now designing a system-on-chip solution to incorporate the Coronis Wavenis RF transceiver along with a microcontroller into a single integrated circuit. An ongoing RD programme is focused on developing enhanced self healing algorithms for ultra-low power networks along with a dual mode master, single chip Bluetooth-Wavenis solution.

Frost Sullivan's Technology Innovation Award is bestowed upon a company (or individual) that has carried out new research, which has resulted in innovation(s) that have or are expected to bring significant contributions to the industry in terms of adoption, change, and competitive posture. This award recognises the quality and depth of a company's research and development programme as well as the vision and risk-taking that enabled it to undertake such an endeavour.

Frost Sullivan Best Practices Awards recognise companies in a variety of regional and global markets for demonstrating outstanding achievement and superior performance in areas such as leadership, technological innovation, customer service, and strategic product development. Industry analysts compare market participants and measure performance through in-depth interviews, analysis, and extensive secondary research in order to identify best practices in the industry.
