A step-by-step guide to managing conflict at work is set to become an indispensable management tool for the downturn.

The Definitive Guide to Workplace Mediation and Managing Conflict at Work is published this month and according to author and business leader Clive Lewis, is intended as a best practice resource for organisations that want to save money and build better relationships at work.

The timing of this release could not be better for hard-pressed business leaders, line managers and HR professionals. From April, the new 2008 Employment Bill will streamline current dispute resolution practice for firms and advocate earlier interventions through the increased use of mediation. It's designed to cut the spiralling costs to UK companies of employment tribunals and the adverse impact that conflict has on management time, workforce health and productivity; a recent Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development survey put the cost of stress-related absence alone at GBP3.7 billion.

As business enters a new period of economic and organisational tension, Lewis offers an essential insight into the benefits and practice of managing conflict without resort to litigation. He examines how the remorseless pace of change can lead to the breakdown of relationships at work; how to recognise the signs; and, most importantly, how to use mediation to avert crises and resolve issues to the satisfaction of all parties.

Amongst the many endorsers of Lewis and his book is Lord Hastings of Scarisbrick CBE, the International Global Head of Citizenship and Diversity, KPMG who sums it up: This much-needed book provides many practical examples of how the management of relationships in the workplace delivers business benefits. It's invaluable.

About the author

Clive Lewis writes from experience. An HR professional himself for over twenty years, he is uniquely placed to combine his perspectives as both an HR Director and a practising, professional mediator. He is currently founder and MD of Globis Ltd, an HR service provider and a leading specialist in workplace mediation and diversity management.

About the new Employment Bill

The Gibbons Review in 2007 concluded that the existing statutory grievance and disciplinary procedures introduced in October 2004 should be repealed and replaced by a simpler and less prescriptive system which would include the flexibility to resolve problems at an early stage, using alternative dispute resolution processes such as mediation. Subject to completion of the parliamentary process, the new legislation will take effect from April 2009.
