MANCHESTER, England, January 20 /PRNewswire/ -- A recent study* reveals fresh evidence that dietary intake of Omega-3 essential fatty acids, sourced from oily fish, has a positive impact on biological ageing and ultimately heart health. The research on over 600 patients with cardiovascular disease, revealed a direct link between Omega-3 and the rate at which protective caps on the ends of cell chromosomes (telomeres)** shorten.

Shortening of telomere length, resulting in cell aging, is believed to pose an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

Findings highlighted those with higher blood levels of Omega-3, showed a reduced rate of telomere shortening after 5 years. Patients consuming the least amount of Omega-3 showed the fastest rate of telomere shortening. The research suggests Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil may preserve the genetic bond which dictates the lifespan of our cells, say scientists.

In response to the research, Sarah O'Brien, from essential fatty acid experts Equazen comments: We welcome these findings which add to the existing body of knowledge surrounding the value of Omega-3. However we know 74 per cent of people still don't eat enough oily fish, the best source of these essential fatty acids. In these instances, the benefits of considering an Omega-3 supplement to help effectively bridge a nutritional gap cannot be underestimated added O'Brien.***
