HARLOW, England, February 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Electrolink Recycling Ltd operates a government-approved compliance scheme for the UK Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations. We are one of the largest contracted collectors of household WEEE from Local Authorities. We are naturally concerned about allegations in the media concerning the shipment of an inappropriate item of WEEE to Nigeria for re-use, although this incident did not involve our company or our operating partners in any way.
The full facts concerning the reported incident will no doubt be investigated by the regulatory Agencies. Meanwhile we can assure our customers and other interested parties that the UK recycling industry generally operates on an ethical basis and that in our own business we take rigorous steps to maintain the highest possible environmental standards. The WEEE Regulations have been implemented successfully in the UK, which is exceeding the target set by the EU. Millions more appliances and items of equipment are now being properly recycled each year.
We believe that there is more than enough capacity and all necessary skills in the UK recycling industry to deal with the recycling and re-use of all the WEEE that arises in the UK. For this reason we process all the WEEE for which we are responsible through approved authorised treatment facilities in the UK, which are regulated by the environmental Agencies. We obtain statutory evidence of compliance from the treatment centres when items have been found suitable to be re-used.
Some of the costs of compliance with the WEEE Regulations that have been quoted in the market have seemed totally unrealistic. Our own procedures and costs have been based on the environmental imperatives in the legislation and we have never been tempted to take shortcuts as a cost-saving measure.
The operation of Local Authority WEEE collection sites is covered by a Code of Practice and our own approach has been to exceed its requirements in certain areas. Our site auditors regularly monitor and report on WEEE handling at our sites. We are obtaining much lower levels of contamination than the Code requires, thus reducing costs to producers. The Code is currently under review as part of a Government consultation on review of the WEEE regulations and we will be making suggestions on how it can be strengthened.
