Dr. Paul Bretherton, Ph.D., is a Cognitive Neuroscientist who specialises in research on visual attention, perception, and memory using EEG. Who also has in interest in attentional deficit and performance enhancement.
Paul was born and raised in Brisbane, Australia where he first trained as a Carpenter before studying Psychology at both undergraduate and honours levels and then moving to London in 2006. Since being in London Paul has achieved Distinction in a Master of Applied Psychological Research and won the Award for Excellence in his project work investigating the 'Automaticity of attentional capture in low anxious individuals during supraliminal and subliminal exposure to positive and negative faces’. During his PhD, Paul described an ERP component that indexes unintended attentional capture.
At present, Paul is investigating the influence of attentional capture on visual working memory, the relationship of attentional competence to ERPs and a behavioral program to predict if patients will respond to a drug treatment program. Paul also has previously investigated the neuro-cognitive determinants of disorders and diseases such as Ischemic Stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, Mild Cognitive Impairment, and Memory loss.
Paul also offers guidance on the methodology, construction, and execution of neuro-cognitive based projects as well as laboratory design and management.
In his university role, Paul teaches in Cognitive Psychology and Neuroscience modules as well as runs workshops on research principals and analysis. Paul also supervises undergraduate and post-graduate students in their research project work and conducts workshops on the methodology of cognitive neuroscience research for post-graduate students and staff and manages the Cognitive Neuroscience laboratories.
As well as being a researcher, he is also an aspiring [i.e. beginning] artist and finds time to paint with oils as well as a little drawing.
