About Katie
Katie is a PhD Candidate in the Department of Animal Science at Cornell University. She struggles daily answering questions such as: "Oh, so you're a vet!?!" and other misunderstandings about animal science.
Katie earned her B.S. from the Animal Science department at Cornell University in 2003. During her time at Cornell, she was able to discover two things: she could make a career of working with animals without being a veterinarian and there aren't many things more interesting than animal nutrition. This led her to an internship in animal nutrition research at the National Zoological Park Department of Conservation Biology in Washington, D.C. Her next position was as a faculty research assistant in poultry nutrition at the University of Maryland (UMD), College Park. Katie then decided to pursue a Masters degree in at UMD studying the effects of amino acid supply on milk protein synthesis in the mammary glands of mice with Dr. Brian Bequette. Upon completion of her M.S., Katie returned to Cornell to pursue a PhD in ruminant nutrition with Dr. Thomas Overton.
Katie's current research involves the role of insulin resistance on the metabolic health of dairy cattle around the time of parturition and during negative energy balance.
