Traditional medicines are important but why they lack appeal.
Traditional medicines are facing problems in the global market and sometime they are not up to the mark though the formulae are correct, ingredients some times are not botanically correctly identified, contents are not monitored , expiry dates are not mentioned.
Famous Chavanprash from famous companies give a list of plants to form ingredients. Its is difficult to establish weather all the ingredients written on the label of the bottle which are vitalize themselves are within the expiry period or have required potency, or have proper chemical composition of ingredients.
Most of the medicinal plants used by traditional medical practitioners are collected by Vaidyas personally. Some time Attar who are expert in identification of plants and selling them sell the plant items. These items show varying results depending on their time of collection, place of collection, plant associations, cultivation practices and fertilizer and nutrient supplies.
Presence of active ingredients plays an important role. Roots are reservoirs of several compounds used in traditional medicines. It is common observation that Chlorophytum roots or for that matter Asparagus roots had better or more or more effective contents as compared to cultivated ones.
Its obvious that cultivation and supply of fertilizers will produce more vegetative growth and as most of the medicines are secondary metabolites they may not be produced in enough quantity.
Three steps are very important for making traditional medicines to work 1. Some botanist trained in identification on one hand and able to decipher plant names used in Vedas on the other must select the plants of right age and right place and time.
2. Some Vaidya must have traditional knowledge to use that plant in a particular preparation.
3. Method of application or taking traditional medicine is also important e.g. with milk or with water or with honey.
Its time to give more thought to these problems to make traditional medicines acceptable in modern world.
Nature cure is best cure.
Traditional medicines are only hope for life style diseases but they have to be authentic and pure and correct to be effective.
