FLORHAM PARK, New Jersey, January 27 /PRNewswire/ --
Global Crossing (Nasdaq: GLBC), a leading global IP solutions provider, today announced that it has introduced Global Crossing EtherExtend(SM) Flex Service to provide its customers with cost-effective and flexible Ethernet access to IP-based services.
EtherExtend(SM) Flex lowers a user's cost of access and matches the access Level of Service to the application's needs. It uses local access vendors to provide the last-mile Ethernet connection to Global Crossing's end-user customer. However, rather than forwarding the customer's traffic over a physical connection to Global Crossing, the traffic is forwarded via a logical connection as a Virtual Local Area Network over a physical Network to Network Interface.
The service is available in North America, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region and will be available in more than 70 points of presence in these same regions, plus Latin America, by the end of 2009. EtherExtend Flex can be paired with Global Crossing IP VPN or Dedicated Internet Access/IP Transit services, whether managed or un-managed. The service also can support Collaboration, Voice over Internet Protocol and other applications that utilize these transport services.
Global Crossing continues to create and deliver high-value network access service offerings to our customers, said Dave Carey, Global Crossing's chief marketing officer. By delivering EtherExtend(SM) Flex to our customers, we're making good on our commitment to continually expand our global portfolios of Access and Ethernet Services for all sales channels.
Global Crossing's strategy is consistent with growing demand for Ethernet Services worldwide. Twenty-two percent of North American enterprises now use Ethernet services, according to a Forrester Research report, Guidelines for Building Versus Buying an Ethernet WAN, published in February 2008. Seventeen percent currently are deploying Ethernet and another 17 percent are in the evaluation stage, the report states. For Europe, a Forrester Research report, Ethernet Services Take Europe by Storm, from September 2008, found that 42 percent of European enterprises had fully deployed site-to-site Ethernet services, up from 25 percent a year ago.
