The Rise Of Empires As Seen By Trees

The Rise Of Empires As Seen By Trees

In ancient times, when things went wrong in battle or the economy, people blamed leaders (if they didn't like them) or the Gods (if they liked the leaders) but maybe they should have blamed global warming.   Errr, and cooling.A new study in Science uses the same techniques as dendrochronology to map the rise and fall of empires and cultures as it was recorded in tree rings - and then to weather conditions.

First Pluto, Now Astrology? Ophiuchus Needs To Be The 13th Sign, Says Astronomer

First Pluto, Now Astrology? Ophiuchus Needs To Be The 13th Sign, Says Astronomer

When I was a younger guy, I read my astrology sign 'predictions' in the newspaper.  It was in the comics section, so clearly no one took it too seriously.  But astrology had at least a foundation in science.   Unfortunately, like homeopathy, it has long outlived its quirky time even though it has been shown to be rubbish. But people who do have an interest in astrology will want to take notice soon.  Astronomer Parke Kunkle told NBC the astrology signs have not been updated in so long they aren't really accurate.  In fact, there need to be 13 instead of 12, due to changes in the Earth's alignment.

Is There Still Gender Discrimination In Science?

Is There Still Gender Discrimination In Science?

Is there still gender discrimination in science?    We hear about it even today but is it a real problem or is it primarily a problem in that 'if there is even one instance it is too many' way that zealots insist on zero tolerance, even when applied to individuals who sometimes make decisions based on silly reasons.

Sexing Up Global Warming For A New Decade

Sexing Up Global Warming For A New Decade

Environmental groups are concerned they have lost the trust of the public regarding global warming so they have taken to new marketing approaches.    They started the last decade with runaway public interest and goodwill and ended it with scandals and black marks on the credibility of the climate field.

Liberal Versus Conservative Biology: Your Eyes Can Reveal Your Politics?

Liberal Versus Conservative Biology: Your Eyes Can Reveal Your Politics?

Wrestlers are taught to ignore an opponent's eyes and instead watch his waist - nothing much is happening that his waist won't be involved in whereas eyes can be misleading.    That means wrestlers are conservatives, according to new research coming out in Attention, Perception&Psychophysics.Progressives follow eye movements more than conservatives, the authors contend.   That means that progressives (also, liberals, if you don't know what the word liberal means) and conservatives quite literally do not see the world in the same way.   The researchers measured reaction to 'gaze cues' - the tendency to shift attention based on another person's eye movements.  Essentially, they wanted to find out who looked more at what distracted someone else.

Have A Merry William The Conqueror Day?

Have A Merry William The Conqueror Day?

In the category of lesser-known holidays that could be celebrated on December 25th, the coronation of William of Normandy in 1066 A.D. as first King of what we know as modern England would have to be considered.    It was the last time a foreign nation would conquer the island nation and years later the Brits gave us all Shakespeare, Christmas Island and America.

Christmas Science 2.0

Christmas Science 2.0

What do you get when you cross Science 2.0, the cultural buzzterm that really took off in 2010 (and brought with it a whole host of colloquial meanings veering into 'web 2.0-ish, it means whatever you want it to mean' jargon) with a western world Christmas season? You get an excuse to do a compilation of science articles, that's what.So once again this year I have compiled topical articles from this year and seasons past.

A Literal Mickey Mouse In The Making? Researchers Create Mice That Sing

A Literal Mickey Mouse In The Making? Researchers Create Mice That Sing

In the 1989 holiday classic "Scrooged", the chairman of the television network predicts that because there were so many pets in America they would become steady viewers in 20 years - which would be 2009.    So he asks network executive Bill Murray to introduce Door Mice instead of Door Men in their live Christmas Eve version of Dickens' "A Christmas Carol", in order to get a head start on appealing to television-watching pets.Far fetched?   Perhaps, though singing mice are sure to get everyone's attention, not just your cat.

Synthetic Biology: Just This Once, Government Decided No New Regulations Are Needed

Synthetic Biology: Just This Once, Government Decided No New Regulations Are Needed

It's rare that a government commission won't take the opportunity to increase its authority and its importance.  It's good job security and makes people feel relevant, even if it's not only unnecessary but being resisted by virtually everyone outside the commission, like in the case of the FCC trying to take over the Internet.Yet The Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues, created by executive order in 2009, released its report on synthetic biology yesterday and said, just this once, things are okay without more rules.

Choose Your Own Adventure - But For Movies, In Real Time

Choose Your Own Adventure - But For Movies, In Real Time

When I was a lad, a fellow named Edward Packard came up with the Choose Your Own Adventure series, books where you read until an action point and you had to make a decision - your decision determined the plot of the book from there on out by sending you to a specific page where things continued.Using real-time video coding procedures, a group of researchers have created a similar approach that is interactive for movie watchers, so if you're one of those annoying French nihilists and like movies that end with a crying clown or whatever, okay, it can happen, but if you're an outrageously optimistic American and like happy endings, that could be possible also.

Poor Nations: Medieval England Had It Better Than You

Poor Nations: Medieval England Had It Better Than You

Economics is called the dismal science for a reason - things are never very good to economists.  Heck, economists have been over the moon about the economic downturn because it gives them something to talk about ("Economy booming, inflation low without any help from economic theory" is not exactly going to be a fun article for economists to write) and they get to be more optimistic than the people with no jobs again this year.Poor nations aren't going to be thrilled about a new paper showing that even peasants under the feudal system had a better standard of living than they had.   Dismal, indeed.

Solar Sails Are Already Old Tech - Get Ready For Solar Wings

We know that light has mass and that beaming enough light at something can push it away - solar sails that will move a craft through the cosmos are based on this idea and NASA tested that concept earlier today when it launched NanoSail-D, a nanosatellite (cubesat) which will unfold to a 100 square foot polymer sail and travel in low earth orbit for a few months.Sails?  We don't need no stinking sails.  Credit: NASA
