Get Radical - And Maybe Be A Better Scientist

Get Radical - And Maybe Be A Better Scientist

In an open science community like Science 2.0, people will feel like they can just sign up and babble about anything and if you protest that what they are doing is not really science (wormholes, brand new theory of everything, social psychology, etc.), they will object with a few predictable responses certain to make everyone chuckle. They go something like; Galileo was oppressed too, Einstein did his best work as a patent clerk, etc.

Good News, Science 2.0 Writers - Women Prefer Arrogant Men

Good News, Science 2.0 Writers - Women Prefer Arrogant Men

Let's be honest - in the 21st century the wussification of men has been in full force.   Being a man is out if that means not being a politically correct, hyper-sensitive, asexual, homogenized follower of all that is cool and popular among the cultural intelligentsia. But testosterone levels are dropping and that could mean any number of consequences for the future of our species. Now you have one more science excuse to sack up and stop identifying as a metrosexual; a group of researchers concluded in 2010 that modest males endure social backlash because they are not 'macho' enough. We may not like arrogant people but meek people are annoying too.

Pseudoscience In The Wall Street Journal Or In Economics?

Pseudoscience In The Wall Street Journal Or In Economics?

Evolution has various mechanisms and one of them is natural selection. While most religious people have no disagreement with science overall, Biblical literalists contend man cannot have changed or evolved.  Some confusion about evolution is understandable - evolution is darn complex - and the disagreement with evolution does not fall strongly into any demographic except the religious. In America, we hear more about 'the religious right' but primarily we hear about them from the secular left - while noting that 39% of Republicans don't accept evolution they fail to mention 30% of Democrats don't either.

Does Voting Make Epigenetic Changes?

Does Voting Make Epigenetic Changes?

We know that voting changes your brain a little - just reading that sentence changed your brain a little, so actions and behaviors certainly change us.  But does voting change your descendants?Epigenetics is really a nascent field and that means there is a lot of interpretation. That also means people can try to make the case that politics is genetic. Which means partisan spinmeisters, within science and outside it, will find new avenues for the confirmation bias of their faithful.

Science Not Settled: Pollutants Down But Ozone Up In B.C.

The key air pollutants that combine to cause smog have dropped due to emissions regulations but baseline levels of ozone are continuing to creep up in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia.Scientists from the University of British Columbia, along with state and environmental groups, are trying to figure out why average levels of ground-level ozone haven't dropped with emissions over the last decade and have instead gone up. A new report from Metro Vancouver shows ambient levels of fine particulate matter, like sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide, have declined by 20 to 60 percent since 2001, but ozone has continued to rise in that same period, up 20 percent.

Sexism In Math Education: A Feminist Sociology Journal Finds Some

Sexism In Math Education: A Feminist Sociology Journal Finds Some

During the educational reform efforts of the No Child Left Behind Act, females achieved parity with males on math tests for the first time in history, yet stereotypes die hard.  Some people think females are just not as good at math.  Is there truth to it?

Californians Worry About Extreme Genetic Engineering

Californians Worry About Extreme Genetic Engineering

What happens when genomics and synthetic biology labs get together?  Anti-science people flip out.  Because, you know, anti-science hippies think scientists are inhuman crazies without families who only care about breaking the laws of nature (maniacal laugh).

Can Cartoons Be Sell Outs? Final Fantasy Characters Wear Prada

Can Cartoons Be Sell Outs? Final Fantasy Characters Wear Prada

It's the team-up no one ever expected to see; video game characters and...fashion.
But it has. The latest issue of Arena Homme+, a men's fashion magazine, has a CGI photo shoot of Final Fantasy video game characters showing off the Prada 2012 Men's Spring/Summer Collection. So much for continuity.  What's next, medieval knights driving tanks? Cylons fighting Jedi?
Whatever.  If you want to see Lightning, Noel, Snow, Sazh and Hope styled for action in Prada, your wish has come true.  If you ever thought models looked unrealistically unattainable before, it's only getting worse.
Most of the characters look something like this in the game:

Navy Biofuels: Strategic Thinking Or Environmental Good Works Program?

Navy Biofuels: Strategic Thinking Or Environmental Good Works Program?

People don't always see it , especially if social change does not move fast enough for their special interest, but the military has always been on the forefront of social issues. A famous American general, John J. "Black Jack" Pershing, got that nickname because he proudly commanded the Buffalo Soldiers of the 10th Cavalry - the "Negro Cavalry" as Native Americans of the 19th century called them - and Pershing didn't want it any other way.  He wanted to win and that meant the best people.

Can The Supreme Court Withstand The Culture Wars?

Can The Supreme Court Withstand The Culture Wars?

People like to live in important times. This is why you will see fairly silly statements like, 'politicial discourse is more acrimonious than ever' even though no one is caning anyone on the floor of Congress, like they did in the 19th century.60 years ago it was culturally taboo for even different types of Protestants to marry each other but Democrats marry Republicans all of the time and have forever. If anything, politics is far less acrimonious that in the past, we just have a rapid communications medium that amplifies when things get weird. And then we have people who make money creating problems to solve

Raw Milk Quarantine Lifted - You Still Shouldn't Drink It

Raw Milk Quarantine Lifted - You Still Shouldn't Drink It

I drank raw milk as a kid.  If you were poor and living in the country decades ago, when dairy farmers still had some measure of autonomy from government rules, you probably did too.  It didn't hurt me. That doesn't mean it's a good idea to drink it; now, instead of poor people in the country who didn't want to pay a lot for milk in a store because it was price controlled by the government, raw milk is a fad for the wealthy anti-vaccine crowd.
