Why Do Tropical Ecosystems Have Higher Biodiversity?

Why Do Tropical Ecosystems Have Higher Biodiversity?

Why is biodiversity is higher in the tropics than in colder regions? It's one of ecology’s unsolved puzzles and has been since the European explorers and naturalists of the 17th and 18th centuries discovered there is a stunningly rich biodiversity in the tropics compared to the temperate regions of the world. A research effort led by University of Arizona ecologists has now unearthed unexpected answers and helped found a new discipline, they call it functional biogeography, in the process.

Almost One Third Of UK Lung Cancer Patients Dies Within 3 Months Of Diagnosis

Almost One Third Of UK Lung Cancer Patients Dies Within 3 Months Of Diagnosis

Though health care is free, it doesn't always come without a cost. The United Kingdom is behind most countries in lung cancer survival and the big reason is because it goes undiagnosed.
It isn't that people won't go to the doctor due to cost, so it must be that doctors don't pick up the signs of lung cancer and investigate them, say the authors of a new study who analyzed family doctors' (GPs') investigation of lung cancer between 2000 and 2013, using data from The Health Improvement Network (THIN), which contains the anonymized health records of millions of primary care patients across the UK.

California Earthquakes: 3 Areas Of San Andreas Fault System Overdue

Four urban sections of the San Andreas Fault system in Northern California have stored enough energy to produce major earthquakes, according to a new study of 'fault creep', and three fault sections, near Hayward, Rodgers Creek and Green Valley, are nearing or past their average recurrence interval.

The Sesame Street Lesson For Physicians

The Sesame Street Lesson For Physicians

More than 2,000,000 people are incarcerated in the United States, the highest incarceration rate in the world - little surprise when abusing a dog is a felony, there are different penalties for attacking a person of one color over another, and judges are given no sentencing leeway in many cases. Given American willingness to put everyone in jail for whatever cultural lobbyists are advocating this year, it was only a matter of time before Sesame Street introduced a character that has an incarcerated father.

How To Fill The Antibiotic Void

How To Fill The Antibiotic Void

With expensive clinical trials, lawyers waiting to sue, and long approval times unless a disease makes it into the New York Times, pharmaceutical companies are leaving the antibiotic space behind.

Gender Stereotypes Prevail In Reports On Suicide

Gender Stereotypes Prevail In Reports On Suicide

If you have read mainstream media reports on suicides, you recognize a common theme: men are painted as angry and rejected, while women are regarded as sociable and mentally ill.A new analysis of daily newspaper coverage of suicide has far-reaching consequences, write scholars from Medical University of Vienna, because when it comes to suicidal behavior, there is a clear gender paradox: the ratio of men to women who actually commit suicide is three to one, but with attempted suicides it is just the opposite - three women for every one man. The authors say the findings demonstrate that the cultural script that bears partial responsibility for this is also found in the reports by Austrian daily newspapers.

Free Radicals Found Beneficial To Wound Healing

Free Radicals Found Beneficial To Wound Healing

While the modern talk is all about how antioxidants and good and free radicals are bad, biology has never been so simple. Rather than being simply destructive to tissues and cells, free radicals generated by the cell's mitochondria—the energy producing structures in the cell—are actually beneficial to healing wounds.
Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) are chemically reactive molecules containing oxygen, such as peroxides and they are commonly referred to as free radicals. A new study finds they are necessary for the proper healing of skin wounds in the laboratory roundworm C. elegans.

New Land Snail Species Named In Honor Of Gay Marriage Movement

New Land Snail Species Named In Honor Of Gay Marriage Movement

A research team has discovered that a snail long confused with a far more common snail is actually distinct - and so they named it Aegista diversifamilia. 'Diverse family' being in honor of the modern gay marriage movement, the authors say.
Aegista subchinensis of Taiwan was first described in 1884. In 2003, one of the co-authors Dr. Yen-Chang Lee noticed that there was morphological divergence between the western and eastern populations of A. subchinensis, separated by the Central Mountain Range, a major biogeographic barrier in Taiwan. Lee suggested that there might be cryptic species within the one identified as A. subchinensis at the time.

How Cholesterol Is Made

How Cholesterol Is Made

Cholesterol has gotten a bad reputation, thanks to mainstream media's penchant for alternating miracle vegetables with scare journalism, which prompts shady diet fad book authors to promote whatever is getting attention this year.
Outside health fads, cholesterol is an essential component of human cells, manufactured by the cells themselves, that serve to stiffen the cell's membrane, helping to shape the cell and protect it. By mapping the structure of a key enzyme involved in cholesterol production, researchers have gained new insight into this complex molecular process.

The Icebergs Of Florida

The Icebergs Of Florida

A new computer model has estimated ocean circulation during the last ice age, about 21,000 year ago, and believe that icebergs and meltwater from the North American ice sheet would have regularly reached South Carolina and even southern Florida.

Dark Matter May Be Half Previous Estimates

Dark Matter May Be Half Previous Estimates

Dark matter is ill-defined and never detected so how can a group of astronomers say current measurements are off by 50 percent?
Most of the matter in the universe is hidden. It's not stars, it's not planets, it's not dust. No one knows what it is. But it must be something or gravity does not work. That something is the mystery. Using inference, if 4 percent of the universe is matter, and around 25 percent is dark matter (what is the rest? Dark energy, an even more fanciful conjecture) then the 'weight' of  dark matter just in our galaxy is 800,000,000,000 times the mass of the Sun, say a group of Australian astronomers who used a method developed almost 100 years ago for their estimate.

How Effective Are 'Natural' Bed Bug Pesticides?

How Effective Are 'Natural' Bed Bug Pesticides?

People concerned about human-insecticide exposure have stimulated interest in alternative bed bug control materials, including oil-based pesticides and detergent insecticides.
But how well do they work? Researchers from Rutgers University evaluated the efficacy of nine essential oil-based products and two detergents that are labeled and marketed as 'natural' bed bug control.
The non-synthetic bed bug pesticides contain ingredients such as geraniol, rosemary oil, mint oil, cinnamon oil, peppermint oil, eugenol, clove oil, lemongrass oil, sodium lauryl sulfate, 2-Phenethyl propionate, potassium sorbate, and sodium chloride, included the following products:
